How to use your commute to work as a tax write off

Many people unfamiliar with Uber may not know this, but there is a handy tool that can allow you to maximize your morning commute called "Destinations". Uber markets this as a way to end the night closer to home, but this can also be used to your advantage, BIG TIME!

If you are like me and have a daily commute that is over 10 miles (20+ miles round trip), the daily commute can become quite the hamper on your car's mileage. Luckily, you can use "Destinations" to write off that morning mileage without having to actually pick someone up; this is because while you have the Uber Partner application open and are "online", you can write off that mileage on your taxes.

There are a few important things to take into consideration while achieving this great tax advantage:

1) You now have 6 "Destinations" per day, so now you have more flexibility to use this to and from your regular job while also using it later at night for when you want to get home

2) The "Destinations" trips do not count towards any rewards. You will still receive star ratings and rider compliments, but if you are trying to reach a nightly or weekly bonus, these rides will not count towards that.

3) You have to enter in a time when you would like to arrive by. This is important to consider because if you are using it in the morning to get to work, leave enough time just in case you do end up picking someone up. Out of the 100 times I have used it during my commute, I have only picked up 8 people (8% chance of accepting a rider). But, for those 8 people I did pick up, I was able to deduct 1,000 miles from my earnings (1,000 x standard milage deduction of $0.535 = $535 savings!).

Hopefully this helps. If you have any tips or tricks you would like to share, please let me know in the comment section below!
